Label Manager for Jira
Bulk rename, merge, and delete labels across your entire Jira instance in seconds.
Overview
Jira labels are free-form text, which means typos, inconsistent casing, and duplicates pile up fast. There's no built-in way to rename a label across all issues, merge "Bug" and "bug" into one, or purge labels nobody uses anymore. Admins are left with manual JQL searches and one-by-one edits.
Label Manager adds a dedicated admin page to Jira where you can clean up all your labels in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many labels can it handle?
Label Manager loads all labels from your Jira instance. It works well with instances that have hundreds or even thousands of labels. The search and filter functionality makes it easy to find specific labels regardless of total count.
Can I undo a rename or merge?
Label operations are applied directly to Jira issues and cannot be automatically undone. Before performing a large rename or merge, we recommend noting down the original label names. If you need to reverse a change, you can rename the label back to its original name using the same tool.
Does it work across all projects?
Yes. Label Manager operates at the instance level, not the project level. It shows labels from all projects the current user has access to. This is particularly useful when the same label exists in different forms across multiple projects.
Who can use Label Manager?
Any user with the "Browse Projects" permission can view labels. To rename, merge, or delete labels, the user needs "Edit Issues" permission on the affected projects. Jira administrators have full access.
Will it affect my automation rules that use labels?
Yes — if you rename or delete a label that's referenced in a Jira automation rule, that rule may stop matching. Check your automation rules before renaming widely-used labels.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Label not showing in list | Label may be on issues the user can't access | Log in as a Jira admin, or check project permissions |
| Rename failed | User lacks "Edit Issues" permission on some affected projects | Ask a Jira admin to grant the necessary permissions |
| Label count shows 0 but label still exists | All issues were removed from the label recently; Jira's index may be stale | Wait a few minutes for Jira's index to update, then refresh |
| Merge didn't remove the source label | Source label still exists on issues in projects the user can't edit | Ensure you have "Edit Issues" permission on all projects containing the source label |
